Services
Dr Thompson treats a wide variety of patients, from the professional athelete looking to optimise performance, to the enthusiastic amateur needing help with a recent injury.
Acute Injury
Dr Thompson treats both acute and chronic injuries. He has a breadth of experience across many high level sporting environments and extensive medical experience from his work in A&E.
Commonly injured areas include the shoulder, hand/wrist, low back, hip and groin, knee, and the foot and ankle.
Following the initial assessment and diagnosis Dr Thompson will explore with you the surgical and non-surgical treatment options and what the pros and cons of these may be, allowing you to pick a treatment plan that is individually tailored to your unique needs.
If you opt for surgery or would even just like a surgical opinion he has access to a network of world class orthopaedic surgeons and specialist physiotherapists who will help you with your rehabilitation and recovery.
Throughout your journey he will oversee your care to ensure a joined up approach to getting you back to peak performance as soon as possible.
Chronic INjury
Dr Thompson commonly manages chronic injuries/issues. In the active population this is often a load-related issue and associated with overtraining.
There are many factors that can predispose an individual to injury, including poor biomechanics, footwear and activity levels, with tendons and bones frequently affected. For example, the patella tendon at the knee, achilles tendon in the lower leg and the proximal hamstring in the buttock/thigh are common sites of tendon injury and the shin and feet are at higher risk of stress fractures.
The diagnosis and severity of these type of injury can often be determined during the initial consultation, utilising diagnostic ultrasound when appropriate. Following an accurate diagnosis Dr Thompson will oversee your care, working as part of the MDT, to ensure best treatment in order to alleviate your pain and allow a graded return to training and sport.
This may involve utilising the different skill sets of other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists to help deliver a personalised rehabilitation programme and podiatrists who can help identify and correct problems with your gait which can have knock on effects causing injuries in other parts of the body.
Osteoarthritis
Dr Thompson also commonly manages individuals with osteoarthritis. This often manifests as pain in a particular joint. Following a diagnosis Dr Thompson will work as part of the MDT in an attempt to improve symptoms. This can often be achieved conservatively with a personalised rehabilitation programme focusing on strength, control and correcting underlying predisposing factors.
If symptoms do not improve with conservative measures Dr Thompson may decide to perform an ultrasound guided injection. If required, he also has close links to many outstanding surgeons if conservative treatment is unsuccessful. Depending on the severity of your symptoms he may utilise the various tools at his disposal at different times.
Athletic Performance
Dr Thompson has experience managing elite-level athletes in various fields. Part of this role is to assess each individual patient and work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure co-ordinated and rounded high quality care. This is important at every level of activity, from enthusiastic amateur to elite level athlete.
Dr Thompson has the skills and knowledge to assist any level of athlete with their performance and to provide a personalised management programme tailored to their individual needs. His comprehensive approach can range from assessing an athlete’s gait and running technique to identifying muscle imbalances or weaknesses in order to minimise the risk of injury, to working alongside nutritionists to explore an athlete’s diet and identify changes that could improve performance, recovery and health. Dr Thompson may also explore aspects influencing mental well-being and general health, such as sleep hygiene.
An athlete can be assured that Dr Thompson and the team he works closely with will not just try to ensure health and return to sport, but for an athlete to reach their sporting potential.
